Find Your Flow: The Gentle Power of Waterbirth

Bringing the restorative calm of the bay into your private birthing sanctuary.

Partner support during a mindful waterbirth experience in the Southern Georgian Bay region.

The Science of Buoyancy (The "Why")

There is a reason we are drawn to the water. Just as the tides of Georgian Bay offer a rhythm of peace, hydrotherapy during labor provides a powerful, natural way to navigate the waves of birth. Often referred to as the 'natural epidural,' water birth offers a weightless environment that encourages movement and reduces pressure on the pelvis.

By submersing in warm water, your body releases fewer stress hormones (catecholamines) and more pain-inhibiting hormones (endorphins). This 'Gate Control Theory' of pain management allows you to move with your body rather than against it, promoting a smoother, more physiological birth experience.

Expert Guidance from a Trained Waterbirth Support Person

Waterbirth is more than just a pool; it is a philosophy of care. As a doula trained through Waterbirth International, I bring specialized knowledge to your birth team that goes beyond standard support. I understand the nuances of temperature regulation (maintaining that 'Goldilocks' zone for baby’s safety), the physics of buoyancy for optimal positioning, and the specific safety protocols for baby’s transition from water to air.

Whether you are planning a home birth with the Nottawasaga Midwives or the Midwives of Headwater Hills, I ensure your waterbirth environment is safe, sacred, and expertly managed. I handle the 'water logistics' so you and your partner can remain focused on the journey.

I provide professional-grade birth pool rentals delivered directly to your doorstep in Collingwood, Stayner, Barrie, Orangeville, and The Blue Mountains. My kits are curated for absolute hygiene and ease of use, ensuring you aren't scrambling for hardware during early labor.

Can I give birth in the water at RVH or CGMH?

Navigating Water Options at CGMH, RVH and HHCC

A common question I receive from Barrie, Collingwood, and Orangeville families is whether they can birth in the water at the hospital. While Collingwood General and Marine (CGMH), Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, and Headwaters Health Care Centre (HHCC) have wonderful facilities including showers and deep soaking tubs for pain management (hydrotherapy), actual delivery in the water is currently an option reserved for home birth settings in our region.

However, my training allows me to support you in utilizing the hospital's water facilities to their maximum potential—using the water to find your rhythm during the most intense parts of labour before stepping out for the delivery itself.

  • Our professional pools are designed with thick, heat-retaining walls. Once filled, the water stays at a comfortable temperature for hours. If labour is long, we simply scoop out a few buckets and top it up with fresh warm water from your tap.

  • This is a major concern for partners! The answer is: surprisingly, no. Between the high-quality liners and the specialized drainage pumps I provide, the cleanup process is swift and contained. I provide clear instructions (and physical support if I am your doula) to ensure your home remains a peaceful space. I also offer an add-on homebirth/waterbirth clean-up service to families who want to have their birthing pool packed away, towels washed, and a fresh bed made for them after birth!

  • Birth is unpredictable. Sometimes things change, or you decide the water isn't the right fit in the moment. While rental fees are for the reservation of the equipment, the peace of mind knowing the option is there is often the greatest benefit. For families who don’t get to use their birthing tub due to unforeseen complications, I offer a complimentary mini newborn & family postpartum photoshoot upon pick-up of the equipment!

  • This is the most common question I receive from families in the Southern Georgian Bay region. According to the most recent evidence-based research and Waterbirth International standards, waterbirth is a safe and gentle option for healthy, low-risk pregnancies.

The primary reason babies do not breathe underwater is the "Dive Reflex." Newborns have specialized receptors in their faces that recognize the difference between the warm, amniotic-like fluid of the birth pool and the cool touch of air. As long as the baby is brought to the surface promptly, they do not attempt to take their first breath until they are skin-to-skin with you.

  • Absolutely. In fact, waterbirths are some of the most beautiful sessions I capture with my Fujifilm system. The way light hits the water creates a soft, ethereal glow that perfectly suits the "Doula By The Bay" aesthetic.

  • In the Southern Georgian Bay region, midwifery protocols typically reserve waterbirth for low-risk, term pregnancies to ensure the highest level of safety. However, for those navigating a twin pregnancy or a journey with a premature baby, hydrotherapy (using the pool during labour but birthing out of the water) can still be a transformative tool for pain management. As an experienced twin and preemie doula, I can help you discuss these options with your OBGYN at CGMH, RVH or Headwaters to see if "labouring in water" is a viable part of your birth plan.

  • While I offer birth pool rentals as a standalone service for families in The Triangle and Dufferin County, many of my birth doula clients choose to bundle the rental (at a discount) for a seamless experience. This ensures that the person supporting your labour is also the one who understands the equipment inside and out. We coordinate delivery to your home in Stayner, Wasaga Beach, or Orangeville by your 37th week (or earliest available date) so you can practice your "setup" and feel confident before the big day.

  • Yes! One of the most significant benefits of birthing in water is the perineal stretching effect. Warm water softens the tissues of the perineum, allowing them to stretch more easily as the baby crowns. This often leads to a lower rate of severe tearing and a reduced need for episiotomies, contributing to a much more comfortable postpartum recovery in those early weeks at home.

  • Part of my Waterbirth Support Person training is knowing exactly when to transition to land. We would move out of the water if:

    • Your Nottawasaga Midwives or Headwater Hills Midwives need to perform a more involved clinical assessment.

    • There are changes in the baby’s heart rate that require continuous electronic monitoring.

    • The water becomes too clouded to maintain clear visibility.

    • You simply feel the "tide" of labour shifting and your intuition tells you that you need a different position on the bed or birth stool.
