The Gentle Presence:
How the 9 Qualities of Mindfulness Guide Doula Care at Doula by the Bay
At Doula by the Bay, my work across the full spectrum of life—from the first breath in a Collingwood waterbirth or birth at RVH in Barrie to the final breath in death doula care—is anchored in more than just physical support. It is rooted in mindfulness.
Jon Kabat-Zinn, the pioneer of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, identified nine core qualities of mindfulness. These aren’t just "meditation concepts"; they are the practical tools I bring into your birth suite, your living room, and your most sacred spaces.
The 9 Qualities of Mindful Doula Care
1. Non-Judging
In childbirth education and postpartum care, there is no "right" way—only your way. I witness your choices without a lens of "good" or "bad" and help you do the same. Whether you choose a physiological waterbirth or a scheduled cesarean, my role is to provide evidence-based education without the weight of judgment. When we drop judgement on ourselves and others, we can move more gracefully and warm-heartedly through life’s vulnerable moments.
2. Patience
Labour and grief have their own timelines. You cannot rush a cervix, and you cannot rush a mourning heart. By embodying patience, I help families stay grounded in the present moment, even when the "waiting" feels heavy. When labour is long or “stalls” I remind expectant parents to tune inward, breathe, and feel into the present moment. When postpartum nights feel never-ending and the body yearns for sleep, I help parents restore their energy and their patience for each new day.
3. Beginner’s Mind
Every birth and every transition is a unique event. Even with years of experience, I approach your story with a "beginner’s mind," ensuring that I am seeing you and your specific needs clearly, rather than relying on assumptions. I help you do the same — dropping stories of what labour or dying should be and opening to see their experience from a beginner’s mind.
4. Trust
I help you cultivate trust in your body’s wisdom and the process of life. In my birth support and photography services, I capture the moments where you find your inner strength, reflecting that capability back to you when you need it most. Through delicate conversations about what life looks like after, we move through fear together and ride the waves on a cultivated foundation of trust.
5. Non-Striving
This is (perhaps) the hardest quality in a goal-oriented world. In birth and death, "doing" is often less important than "being." I hold space for you to simply exist in the experience without the pressure to perform or achieve a specific "perfect" outcome. I help families drop expectations when needed to create space for a more authentic experience.
6. Acceptance
Acceptance isn’t about liking everything that happens; it’s about seeing things as they actually are in the present. This clarity allows us to make the best possible decisions based on evidence-based education rather than fear or denial. Through acceptance meditations, I help pregnant coupled accept their baby just as they are (even if baby is in a stubborn breech position); I help families accept when labour & delivery don’t go as planned.
7. Letting Go
The transition into parenthood or the transition at the end of life requires a profound "letting go" of what was. My doula services provide the emotional container needed to release the old self and embrace the new. Whether through miscarriage grief meditations or breath work to release stagnant energy, letting go plays an integral part of letting in what beauty is to come.
8. Gratitude
Even in the intensity of postpartum recovery or the stillness of end-of-life care, we look for the "glimmers." Practicing gratitude helps nourish the spirit and build resilience for the journey ahead. I help families remember the impactful practice of gratitude, not through “toxic positivity” but as a way of leaning into the rich meaning in life’s circumstances.
9. Generosity
True doula care is an act of generosity—giving full, undivided attention and compassion. I am here to offer my presence and expertise to the Georgian Bay community, ensuring no one has to walk these paths alone. I believe that when I give generously, I also receive generously. Life is a delicate balancing act of giving and receiving. When doula care is done well it can be tremendously mutually satisfying and uplifting.
